Doscher’s Candy Co. has been downtown for 140 years and was started by Claus Doscher, who came over from… you guessed it… Germany in 1865 at age 17. He joined his uncles in the candy business, but went on his own in 1871 with his brothers. The company was family-owned for four generations, For six years, Greg Clark owned and ran the company while working with the last original Doscher family member, Harry, before Harry passed away in 2009, He learned everything first-hand. Since then he has brought in additional ownership with the Nielsen and Gilligan families.
The company has recently relocated their facility to an eye-catching, yellow Victorian house built in 1835 in the heart of Newtown. They sell great flavors of candy canes in bright colors that are perfect for Easter baskets. They even have some yummy flavors like Champagne and Pina Colada for some adult baskets ;) The French Chews come in bar size or minis and in some great flavors, as well, like my fave…Salted Caramel, Tropical Chews and Easter Minis.
Not only does the new space have the store and factory tour, it also has an adorable tea room where they have “Afternoon Tea on Wednesdays”. Besides tea, they offer finger sandwiches, quiche, scones, pastries and more. This would be such a great afternoon to meet a friend or celebrate a birthday or just have some girl fun.
Another fun day to add to your calendar… tour the factory, see them making all the sweets in the original copper kettles that have been used since day one and learn a ton of fun facts along the way (like they only have a staff of nine making huge batches of candy everyday)! Stop in Saturday March 31st from 10-3 for their Easter Open House. They also have the famous Red Legs Chew you will want for Opening Day on Thursday!
