The Standard in Covington… A great place to “fill up”

The Standard  is everything but “standard!” Owners Emily Wolff & Paul Weckman, who have sprinkled their love around Covington with other wonderful places such as Frida 602, Ottos, Larry’s All American Cafe (all these can be added to your list if you haven’t been :) having taken an old 1930’s filling station (for you youngsters that is a gas station and a car repair) and made it one of the coolest places to grab dinner and a cocktail. It was a project that was a perfect extension of their creativity.

They may have taken away the pumps and oil spills, but Emily & Paul have creatively told the history of the station and it’s former, long-time owner Butch Ostendorff with the cool decor. When you look around you see nods to the good ole days with the keys that hang from the crystal chandelier left behind by former customers. Butch’s tools are now used as the beer taps and the amazing mural that covers the dining room wall that incorporates things found in the desks. You have to take a look at the wallpaper that Emily drew… amazing!

The outside is the perfect place to visit offering a funky vibe including a table designed by a local artist who has done cool stuff all over town. They also engaged some street artists to add “graffiti” to the walls. If you happen to be standing at the entrance when the trains pass by overhead you see what Emily calls their “moving art” because it’s never the same. The graffiti from the trains tie in with the cool designs on the building.

Ok, now that we’ve talked about what a cool atmosphere of The Standard,  let me tell you how delish the food is! The food menu has an Asian flair and even though it is a smaller menu it is stocked with some amazing dishes. It will change with the season and with these two I have no question it will always be fantastic. Must-haves are the Corn Chow Chow and the Watermelon Salad with the tajin sprinkle to give it just the right heat, the KY Banh Mi and the Honey Sriracha Tenders were so good and we shared the “Shop Bowl” which is chilled noodle salad and you can add a protein…yum!

There are plenty of cocktails, but I suggest you try the Bourbon Slush not only because it’s damn good, but because it is the recipe of Marge… Butch’s wife who used to make the slushies and put them in dixie cups in the freezer for customers to have while waiting for their cars to be repaired, :) LOVE

As you can see – from the decor to the vibe, to the food – this place is not Standard, but it is THE Standard. I promise it a great place to get a “fill up” haha get it? :)

Ivory House in Westwood…Fab but not too Fussy!

Ivory House

I was so excited to check out the new restaurant in Westwood and I left even more excited thinking of when I could go back. This is a Foodie Alert!

Ivory House opened mid-July. It has already been a welcomed addition to the community who is so excited to have an upscale, yet not overly fussy, a place to go and experience “elevated familiar foods” as described by Head Chef Dana Adkins. Dana and sous chef,  Rob Scannell come from good stock with expertise in the industry at some of Cincy’s favorites. Together they have created an extensive menu that will please everyone’s palate even catering to the vegans & vegetarians in your life.

What I tried…

Chef Adkins brought out some of his favorite items for me to try and WOW… let’s just say I wasn’t hungry the rest of the day :) I started with the Scallop Crudo Scallops topped over collard green kimchi, pickled chilies, whipped lard, and crispy benne seed crackers. It was followed by the Ivory House Waygu & Cheddar Sandwich – waygu top round, Ivory House steak sauce, smoked Ohio cheddar, onion straws on a brioche bun. Oh, and if that doesn’t sound like enough, I dove into the Mussel Diablo with pickled chili- tomato broth, sorrel salsa verde, and grilled bread. They, of course, have an amazing craft cocktail menu to help wash all of that down. I tried the Death Valley Farm Old Fashion and the East Meets Westwood (cute name and delish).

They take enormous pride in the use of around 90% local ingredients. I know that we hear people talk about this a lot,  but it really is cool when you can support so many people in our area who are growing produce and farms that are able to supply local meat and local cheese that ends up creatively prepared for us to enjoy. I was told that one day Chef went to the farm, pulled the carrots, came back washed, and prepared them for the dinner menu that evening… you can’t get fresher than that.

I love what they did with the old bank space. They kept the 60’s bank entrance but really took the inside to another level. The beautiful blue that is carried throughout the whole restaurant is so pretty and accented with white. And nice touch with the white piano that will entertain you with live tunes Thursday thru Sunday.

Owners & Ivory House

The owner’s Rick Pouliot & Frank Eversole didn’t just pick Westwood out of a hat for this venture. They are long time residents and property investors in Westwood. Frank said he loves seeing all of the development happening and the neighborhood is really on an upswing. He loves the neighborhood and is pleased that people are really happy to see the Ivory House in the area.

Why Ivory House? It is named in homage to James N.Gamble .. you guessed it from the P & G family (Ivory Soap in case you haven’t caught on yet:)  but, more importantly, the last Mayor of Westwood when it was its own city.  They were in awe of the legacy of what he did for the area and his philanthropy so they felt it was a perfect name.

The Lytle Park Hotel… A beautiful night stay in Cincinnati

Lytle Park Hotel

Have you been Looking for a great hotel in the heart of Cincinnati that is rich in history, has a great restaurant, and an amazing rooftop with incredible panoramic views? Well… it’s open and it’s the new Lytle Park Hotel!

The hotel is an Autograph Collection that was built on the site of the historic Anna Louise Inn which is in Lytle Park, another city gem.  The building is unique and so cool as they preserved the charm of the Inn and built the hotel around it and another existing building.   Entering the lobby, you can glance up and see the original windows but don’t forget to take time to look at the street side view from the outside… I love how they kept so much of the original structure. The lobby’s chandeliers are stunning and the color scheme is so inviting throughout.  This is what makes an Autograph collection so unique in each city. They really let the hotels embrace the history and story of the city it’s in.

Let me say that no stone was left unturned when designing this beauty and bringing homage to Cincinnati with the amazing decor. You will be in awe the minute you enter the lobby. The feel of the park is present inside and out with the theme subtly apparent throughout. An eye-catching skylight above the lobby bar lights the upside-down queen tiara, boasting 96 jewels, a nod to the Queen City.  Behind the indoor dining for Subito (means “fast” in French) there is a private dining room called the Oak Room. I want to mention this room because they kept this room, but had to lower the floor 4ft. which is why the windows are very high providing such a cool perspective of the different views… This just shows how much care and thought went into the preservation of this hotel.

And who doesn’t want to look over Lytle Park and the Taft Museum as they dined outdoors? This whole area is open-air and has heated floors, so is a perfect place to dine outdoors during the Fall months. We had the pleasure of a beautiful night of dining on the patio. The menu has something for everyone. Housemade pasta, stone-oven pizzas to Osso Buco and Steaks but don’t skip over the salad and apps. I loved the Prosciutto & Bleu Salad, Fritto Misto yumm lightly fried shrimp, calamari, broccolini, oysters, and then we shared the Salmon and one of the amazing steaks. They have scratch-made sauces that will take your steak to another level ;)  fantastic.

There are 106 rooms including 2 Presidential Suites and a few executive suits. I had the chance to stay the night and the rooms are beautiful with special touches throughout. The luxury Parisian bathrooms, Italian linens, Nespresso coffee maker, and after CODID19, they will resume special touches like turndown service and more.

The topper (pun intended) is the Vista Rooftop Bar. This is now the largest and only 4- season rooftop in Cincinnati with beautiful panoramic views of the city. A gorgeous Rookwood bar serving up drinks in pretty crystal glasses… making the drinks taste even better ;) There is also a food menu to enjoy. All of the accordion doors and windows can close allowing a view all year long.

So, go soak it in, whether you want to just look around and have a drink, eat dinner or book a night the Lytle Hotel is truly a new gem in our city. Here are some highlights you should keep in mind.

Things to look for while visiting:

  • #1 is the amazing piano player in the lobby on the weekends!
  • The Rookwood fountain by the elevators that was built in 1910 in the original building
  • The cool mirror wall by the Vista bathrooms
  • Check out the shop in the lobby for some Cincy favorites.
  • They have office space for meetings in the lower level which also houses a kitchen area, tables for games, and a lounge area for work or reading. There is also a state of the art gym with a Peloton bike and tons of equipment.
  • Pet friendly up to 50 lbs.
  • A beautiful room with an outside balcony that can be rented for parties, weddings, meetings, etc.
  • Try the Mable Manhattan only in the lobby bar! It is named after a lady who was an immigrant and lived in Lytle her whole life. She visited the hotel during construction but passed away at 106 before the opening.

When visiting you should check out a few places:

  • Take a short walk along sidewalks then over the Purple People Bridge. A wonderful outdoor fun area with food and drinks at Newport on the Levy and the Aquarium
  • The Taft Museum – 200 year old historic house filled with amazing charm and works of art.
  • Many of our amazing restaurants. Check out my Instagram or website for ideas
  • Walk along the river to Smale Park.
  • Enjoy Reds, Bengals and FC soccer games and the Reds Museum

Sugar & Spice in OTR ~ Brunch Vibes

Sugar & Spice

S & S has been one of my breakfast hangouts for a long time. I have a soft spot for iconic places in our city and this gem has been serving up eggs and their famous wispy pancakes for 80 years at their Reading Rd. location. They have recently remodeled the old Diner in OTR for a second location and I think it is the best fit ever!

The Diner has so many memories for me. I used to go there with my sisters before we hit up dance clubs (The Metro :)) back in the ’80s. It was perfect because we strategically picked the end seats at the old bar because when the bartenders would give us “leftovers” when they made too much :) The Diner was also where my surprise 40th bday was. Now I think the old diner car has found its perfect match. The remodel is bright and cheery with an old school vibe.

Adam Mayerson is the new owner, but his family is generations full of Sugar & Spice patrons! He is excited to share what his family has loved about S & S with all of us by keeping the Reading location open and showing his own twist with the OTR location. Check out Marcia who has been eating at S & S since she was 14… when she and her husband used to go after dancing the night away at Moonlight Gardens. She even brought her collector mug on her first visit to the new location.

The menu is the same as the original S & S. They have added a few salads for the downtown lunch crowd and the Cubano which looks delish. When we visited we shared the Breakfast Burrito that is packed with goodness and the Eggs Benedict with crispy potatoes. If you’re visiting Cincinnati this is the perfect place to grab some of our Cincy favorites… Geotta! I describe it as a poor man’s sausage and it’s sizzling good.  Holding on to tradition everyone turns into a kid when they get to grab your favorite rubber ducky for a souvenir :)

There’s also a back bar (when seating at the bar opens up again) and a great outside dining area. This is one place that the decor will wake you up before you even get your cup of coffee ;)

Things to know:

  • 1203 Sycamore St. in OTR
  • Open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily
  • Masks to be worn during this time only to be taken off when seated
  • Parking- on-street parking is available and there is a lot across from S & S. Remember to download the parking app. Cincy EZ Park to make parking easy.
  • You are a walk away from Pendleton so take a stroll up and check out that adorable area.

New Cincinnati restaurants of 2019!

Feeling Full and Happy

Here are some of the awesome restaurants I visited in 2019 … I ‘m going to list while looking    through (and drooling) at my pictures :), so no ranking here just damn good places to put on your radar

Station Family & BBQ – 400 Wyoming Ave. Another great addition to the busy lives of sisters Kelly & Caitlin!  See my blog post HERE.

Boom Box Buns – (soon at 1400 Republic St. ) Fantastic steamed buns are full of deliciousness! Very exciting news –apparently, I wasn’t the only one that loved them because now they’re getting a new real space…moving up from the cute walk-up window! See my blog post HERE.⠀

The Bakers Table – 1004 Monmouth St. Newport- Adorable and a fantastic brunch that caught on so well they are now open for dinner! It was not only on Hey Michelle’s fave brunches, but it also made USA Today best restaurants for 2019 :) See my IG post  HERE.

Branch– 1535 Madison Rd.- Great rehab of an old bank that is now full of life and charm. This is a sibling of Littlefield in Northside and has an amazing winter menu offered right now. Don’t forget they also have a great brunch. See my blog post HERE .

On The Rhine Eatery – 100 E. Court St. (Inside Kroger) – The best “food hall” around because it is all local restaurants in one place. Grab the fam and go because there is something for everyone! Kitchen 1883, Django, Dope, Queen City Whip, Eli’s BBQ and a full bar. See my IG post HERE.

The Pickled Pig – 645 E. McMillan St. – Some amazing fermented delights! This is like your local kick-ass deli with some really creative foods. Stop in and say Hi… it’s that kind of place :)

Goose & Elder – 1800 Race St.- James Beard Nominee and really cool guy, Jose Salazar, opened this really cool eatery that is home to the most delish fried bologna sandwich and much more. Business in the front; party in the back (there’s a great bar in the back area, so check it out)! See my IG post HERE .

Fausto – 44 E. 6th St. – The Ferrari Brothers are taking care of you from dusk to dawn with their new place in the lobby of the very cool Contemporary Arts Center. Really talented guys doing really great stuff. See my IG post  HERE

Karrikin Spirits – 3717 Jonlen Dr. – Ok, so it technically opened in December 2018 but, I didn’t get there until 2019, so it counts. This out of the way distillery, has a big open space and somehow found a way to make the dining side very cozy and hip. They serve up some really great food.

The Lonely Pines Steakhouse – 6085 Montgomery Rd. – Jacob Trevino and the Gorilla Cinema Group opened their first restaurant and I dig it. Read HERE for more.

Social OTR – 1819 Elm St. – A restaurant with a cause… doesn’t get much better than that! Not only is it a cool spot, but it also gives culinary training for people looking for employment. So, go eat and leave with a full belly and heart.

Tortilleria Garcia– 5917 Hamilton Ave.- Whoop, Whoop! This place is really delish and tort-ally authentic Mexican food. The fun part is watching them pump out the fresh tortillas all day!

View at  Shires’ Garden -309 Vine St. 10th floor- Some of the greatest views in town! The building has an amazing history and the cozy feel of the dining area is awesome with little sitting areas in addition to regular tables. Views, of course, can be enjoyed inside as well as outside. There is dining outside even in the winter with the igloos! See my IG post HERE

Mazunte Centro – 611 Main St. – If you know you know! Mazunte in Madisonville is AMAZING and now they have a location downtown and it has a really cool vibe and an even cooler menu!

Parlor on Seventh – 43 W 7th St. Covington- Love this little gem and I adore the staff even more. Seriously great menu (breadsticks are a must). Great cocktails and you can grab some bites and head over to Braxton Brewery. See my IG post HERE

The Highland Room Mt. Adams/The View Mt. Adams -1071 Celestial St.- Mondays aren’t for staying home anymore! The unbelievably beautiful place opened by Funky’s Catering is an event space, but on Mondays only, it is open to the public. The menu changes monthly and you’ll have one of the most stunning views of the city!

Forty Thieves – corner of Race & Liberty- It’s a bar, it’s fun and it has a very creative walk-up window restaurant. It is Mediterranean food but then every Sunday they bring in different chefs and they create their own menu for the day! I love this… get on their IG so you can see what creative force is working the stove. See my blog post HERE .

Bridges – 133 E Court St.- Momos that’s all I’m going to say… go get them:) They do have more — great Nepalese food.  Only open until 3 downtown, so head there for lunch or hit their Northside location for dinner.

Pepp & Dolores -1501 Vine St.- Amazing decor, food, and bars(yes, they have two bars and you just need to go see it). See my blog post HERE .

Kitchen by Butler’s Pantry-50 E. Rivercenter Blvd.- There has been a takeover and a revamp of KBBP! They have an amazing brunch on the weekends with a great bloody mary bar. They are open all week for breakfast and lunch. See my IG post HERE

Mesa Loca– 2645 Erie Ave.- Located in the heart of Hyde Park Square Mesa Loca offers a really fun vibe and some tasty Mexican. I can’t wait for warm weather to sip on some tequila on the back patio!

If you opened in 2019 and aren’t listed … I’m on my way :) So many great places so little time.  Have fun and make sure to tag me in your pictures when you go and tell them that Hey Michelle sent ya ;)

Pepp & Dolores

Pepp & Dolores

A night with no regrets…

Although you are stepping into a new space, you feel like you just came to dinner at a big, old- city Italian spot. Perfect Italian food in OTR. Every dish, recreated from the Lanni family cookbook at Pepp & Dolores, was so amazing. The name — after grandma & grandpa, of course. The recipes and feel of the family keep consistent throughout the restaurant.

The Thunderdome Restaurant Group, which includes brothers Joe & John Lanni and partner Alex Blust, have had one hit after another — Maplewood, Currito, Bakersfield, The Eagle, CityBird, Krueger’s, Kaze and SoHi.  But, I feel this is the one they’ve thought about since the beginning. They do food and they do it really well and this was worth the wait.

When you walk in, you will think this has been around for decades. It has that old-school Italian feel with the checkered floor, bistro tables, and a great bar. (My favorite part of the bar is the little cocktail shelves.  You feel like you’ve marked your spot by having a place to put your drink) :)  There is also a little surprise…hidden behind the bar are two movie-like stairwells that lead down to the lower level that has a romantic feel – dark wood and black and white family photos all over the walls and another cool bar.

Ok, now that you can picture yourself sitting and sipping, let’s talk about food. This menu is full of some of the most amazing Italian I’ve tasted.  For starters, the Artichokes All Giudia is the prettiest artichoke you’ve ever had and the flavor makes it something you won’t want to share ;) The Dunk is warm bread that is dunked into a bowl of olive oil, vinegar and is full of seasoning that is sure to be a party in your mouth. (John told me this family recipe started when they were kids and they would fight to use the bread to soak up the dressing at the bottom of the salad bowl). Ah, traditions!

The Dunk

I’ve been here a few times already so I can recommend several items I’ve tried – The Meatballs, Eggplant Involtini, The Sunday Sauce, Pesto Pasta (yum),  Cacio E Pepe (if you love pepper, you’ll love this), The Vodka Pasta, Limone (light and delish). I have really enjoyed every bite, so you can’t go wrong. The service makes you feel you are part of the family. Even on the friends & family night which is usually the practice night, service was excellent – it felt like they have all worked there forever. That is rare these days!

Make sure to look through the window outside on 15th St. so you don’t miss out on watching the pasta that is being made fresh – every day! Also, make sure you enjoy one of the specialty drinks especially the Fratelli Libre (with a special Pepp or Dolores mini coke bottle) or the Limoncello & Tonic. Obviously, there is still more I need to taste, so I’ll meet you there!
