Toast & Berry… great bites in Montgomery!

Good Mornin’ Montgomery! If you need a great bright start to your day or want to meet up with someone for lunch head to Toast & Berry. The proud owner, Ed, told me that his vision was a breakfast restaurant that was bright — like the kind of bright you get when you’re at the beach — and he built just that. Picture Chip & Joanna Gaines building a restaurant…. well this is it! I love to sit at the bar especially when I’m dining by myself, ‘cause you get to chat with the bartenders and get a real feel of the place.

Drink first… which wasn’t easy because they had a great variety. The Mimosa Flight was the answer for me.  I got to pick 3 out of the 6 options, so I chose Elderberry (yes, because I always add a drop to my champagne anyway), raspberry and ginger — and all of them were delish (and, I didn’t even have “order envy” because I had 3 choices! The next delight was the Jam Sampler with three of their own jams – blueberry bourbon (my favorite), strawberry & raspberry – all served up with a perfect-sized crostini. On to my main high recommend dish… the Inigo Montoya ( who doesn’t love anyting from The Princess Bride?? :) . I love Mexican breakfast, so this was right up my alley. And, honestly, I could have easily split these dishes with someone and been very happy since the portions are a nice size.

There is something for everyone on the menu from breakfast to lunch and a great kid’s selection. They even have yummy stuff for the gluten free friend ;) They are launching a new menu soon featuring 10 new flavors of French Toast!

The coffee bar is right by the door and is designed for you to be able to pop in and grab a quick latte or a great cup of tea from local tea brewers.  They have great nitro on tap, too or you can just a regular good cup of Urbana coffee to go.

Things to know:

  • Parking and entrance in the rear
  • Outdoor seating available
  • Reservations for parties over 6 people
  • T.V.’s at the bar area

It is a beautiful walk and Smale Riverfront Park has so many fun things for the young and young at heart, stop and play on the giant chess board or dance on the keyboard like in the movie “Big” or ride on Carol Ann’s Carousel, or relax on the swings and watch people enjoying running through the water features.

The Art of Entertaining: Great spot for creative dinners

I just have to tell you about a great night we had at a spot up the street from my house. I, embarrassingly, didn’t know what went on in this storefront spot until the other night! I always saw people walking in and heard music from time to time and I saw the wine. I was intrigued that’s for sure!  So, I’m going to let you in on this little secret…Julie Dowty, the owner, has had this place for years and, simply, has a fun passion for this creative and casual environment that I think you will enjoy.

The Art of Entertaining. OK, I don’t even know where to start. It is a great place with a few different rooms that can be used for meeting spaces, dinner parties, birthdays, showers, they work with any theme and any number of people. You can also enjoy some of the planned events like the Vine & Dine with live music or Pop- up dinners.

I went to a pop-up wine dinner. It was a mix of people all ready to have fun and by the end of dinner, we were all chatting with each other and having a great time. We started the night with a wonderful charcuterie board and a couple of wines that Julie served up with a personal, fun description for each one. This wasn’t a detailed discussion, but more of a brief story of how she found that particular wine. You could follow along as you get a handout with a lot of information that you can look at on your own time (sometimes you just want to sip and eat not listen to the in-depth details cheers to that). We, then, moved on to enjoy an awesome crab salad crostini yum! After that, we all shifted into the other room where we mingled and some of the guests were invited to join in making the vinaigrettes for the meal. It was so fun getting involved. Not everyone had to do it, so it was very casual. Some of us wondered out onto the back patio and then we decided it was such a beautiful night we might as well just eat out there… so we did. When the salads were served, everyone was voting (very competitively :) on their favorite vinaigrette which just added to the unique fun of this whole experience. For dinner, we were served a delish salmon over jasmine rice and, for dessert, we all came back into the kitchen and assembled our dessert of lemon cream & raspberry phyllo napoleons.

The whole night was such a unique interactive experience, that I loved so much that I already made a reservation to celebrate my mother’s 95th birthday dinner there!

I would suggest checking out their calendar HERE and join the mailing list so you can keep up with the fun. Also, if you have children, look into the Summer Kids in the Kitchen classes! It looks like they have so much fun. If you oversee work team building or you are part of a group of people wanting a farm to table experience, or you would enjoy an interactive Italian dinner or you just want to be served a delicious meal…. this is the place to go! And for some real fun, they told us that they have done a cooking competition with a group of teams where they had to make a dish using what was available in the cabinet just like on t.v. I think that would be a blast.

Things To Know:

• 2019 Madison Rd. Look for the Uncorked sign

• Plenty of parking on the street or in lot across the street

• They also have a wine store so stop by and check it out

Flying High at iFly Cincinnati!

There is no feeling quite like flying… I’ve always wanted to jump out of a plane and soar while most likely squeezing the life out of a trained skydiving instructor! Well, I did the 101 of this at the new and amazing iFly Cincinnati. I was still a little nervous but after meeting my instructor, Nick aka Palmer and watching my group “drop-in” one by one, I got so excited. It doesn’t take too long to adjust when you are in the tunnel for the first time, except you can learn the hard way that smiling too much is probably not so good…. just saying… a little more “spit” than expected). Hahaha. The instructors help you with the proper moves and guide you as you go up and down. They teach you how your arm movement helps you change direction to the right and left. The second time in the tunnel they show you how to go up high. WOW, what a feeling! Everyone seems to have the same reaction when they come out of the tunnel…” That was awesome”.  Even the guy in my group who had jumped from planes hundreds to times was psyched.

The whole experience is about an hour and a half from the time you watch the mandatory

safety video, suit up and fly. The more you visit, the better you get! I want to be able to do flips so bad, so I’ll be back! The best part is this is something for everyone ages 3 and up. There is an observation area all around the tunnel for your non-fly friends. They will probably end up doing it the next time you go… just saying.

One thing I should mention, because I think it is amazing, is that it is limitless so it is an inclusive experience for anyone! They fly with people with physical challenges. I would think this must be an incredible experience!

Teachers–check out their outings for schools which incorporates a STEM program. This looked interesting to me as it is such a hands-on, immersive opportunity. They also have a cool virtual reality fly so you can take it up a notch and fly around the world and more. You have to check this place out it is fun for everyone!

Great Walk Up Windows in Cincinnati!

I am so excited to announce that I am doing a spot for WCPO-Channel 9 at 7:00 on Thursday nights. Kristyn Hartman and I will be getting “in the kitchen” at local restaurants around town and the sharing the story behind the owners and their vision. So, tune in. We hope you will enjoy.

Walk-up Windows in OTR

No need to get all dolled up for dinner when you can go out and grab a meal from one of the new walk-up windows in town.  I love this whole idea because you can go get a bite and take it home. Or, if you’re at one of the many bars around town that let you bring your own food, (most that don’t sell food are ok with you bringing it in) these are a great stop along the way! There are a couple of windows that are already attached to a bar, so that makes it super convenient. The other plus is it can be an inexpensive night out … and who doesn’t like that?

Boom Box Buns!

I can’t even contain myself on the yumminess of this place. There are usually 3 selections a night always including one vegetarian. (they are only open Friday & Saturday from 7:00pm until Sold Out which doesn’t take long). What kind of buns you ask? Well, damn good ones. They are the soft steamed Chinese buns called bao buns, filled with seasoned filling of choice. At $4 a bun, call me a cheap date!

Owner Nathan Friday is always there with his beanie cap on ready to take your order. You might recognize him from being the sous chef at Please –another great place in OTR. If you’re an 80’s person, you will love the boom box theme!

What I recommend is grab your buns and walk over to Mr. Pitiful’s at 1323 Main. Grab a cold beer and a table and have a great night.

13th Street Alley

A bit of Philly in the alley! I have been wanting to try this because my family loves Philly cheesesteak. I happened to be parked near this place the day I was planning a dinner party. I talked to them and told them I didn’t want to spoil my appetite, so I would come back. They insisted I try one and just take a bite. So, I did… then drove off with the rest of the OTR Philly sandwich on my front seat. I went to my next appointment, looked down, looked around and took one more bite. I ate the whole dang thing! It was so good. I can only imagine how good it would be at 2 o’clock in the morning! The fresh cut fries were just as tasty.

They have a couple tables out front or you can just shove it in while you’re in your car (hahaha).

126 E. 13th Street. Monday- Thursday 11am-9pm, Friday & Saturday 11am-3pm, Sunday

12pm-6pm

Gomez Salsa

This place has been around the longest, but it is still the top “go to” food choice! They serve up tacos and bowls, but their claim to fame is the turtle. It’s like a burrito stuffed with goodness, but it is flat and has a tad of crunch. You can design your own to your liking with plenty of options. I’m drooling while I am typing… Andrew Gomez comes from a small town in Texas where he learned from his grandmother and father how to make the best tacos and salsa since he was a kid.

After playing around with variations of tacos he happened upon the “turtle shell”. Thank you, Andrew ‘cuz it is flipping awesome.

While the walk-up window has moved inside Halfcut, so you can just eat inside and grab a beer.

107 E 12th St.  Tuesday & Wednesday 11am-10pm, Thursday 11am- midnight, Friday & Saturday 11am-2:30am Closed Sunday & Monday

Babushka Pierogies

They have a space in Findlay Market, but now have a weekend walk-up window in OTR serving up their Ukrainian stuffed pierogies.  Owners Sarah Dworak and Iwona Handloser have combined their family recipes to make these delish potato pockets full of fun fillings. The most common is cheese fillings, but they have gotten creative and came up with some nods to Cincinnati with fillings such as 4-way and pizza. You may have spotted them in Findlay Market and now they have the late-night window. Just recently, they opened Wódka Bar (but it is pronounced Vodka even though I like to say wodka!). So now, you can eat your pierogies while sipping on vodka.

1200 Main St. Open 6:00- 2:30 am

Forty Thieves

Mid-East Street serves up food like Falafel, Beef Shawarma and more. It was very tasty and a has a comfortable, casual vibe. You can eat on the spacious patio or stay in the Holiday Spirits Bar that is connected and has the same owner. And, this isn’t the owners first rodeo. Dan Wright and his wife, Lana, also own Abigail Street, Pontiac Bourbon & BBQ and Senate. So, they are just adding to their list. I would check out Holiday Spirits, too. It’s a fun spot with skee-ball, pool and a bar full of colorful cocktails, frozé and more.

This is a halfway point between Findlay and the OTR bar area.

1538 Race. St.  Tuesday-Thursday 4-12am, Friday & Saturday 12pm-2am, Sunday 12pm-12am

Lonely Pine Steakhouse: Cool new spot in Pleasant Ridge

Jacob Trevino, the master- mind behind some of Cincinnati’s quirkiest and fun bars, has ventured into the restaurant business. His newest creation is Lonely Pine and it’s the town’s newest steak house.  As expected, it’s very cool. As Jacob describes it, he combined the vibes of Route 66, Cowboy and Mad Men all in one. He wanted it to reflect what he remembers growing up in Texas. I felt like I was thrown back into childhood with the mid-century feel as soon as I walked in. Lonely Pines’ goal is to be a laidback, high end, steak place and I think they have nailed it.

You can view your cuts of meat in the entrance right at the meat counter. There will always be about 5 cuts of high-end meats provided by butcher Sam Mischenko and a wonderful menu inspired by head chef Jared Beckman. They offer a handful of toppers “Stack your Steak” selection to put on your steak. When my husband took a bite of his Wagyu steak he said, “this meat is so good I don’t think it need the sauce”. Although, when he finally dove into the “Lonely Pine steak sauce,” he lit up with how tasty it was. In addition, to the regular menu there is a wine, steak, dessert and cocktail of the week. I tried the Skirt Steak, which happened to be the steak of the week, topped with a guacamole concoction that had a little kick and was so flipping good. I suggested to Jacob to make that topping an option on the menu! There are a wide variety of sides to share. We had the cooked carrots which were really good … were still a little crisp and cooked with pancetta –a lot of delish.  We also tried the bone marrow appetizer which is unique and probably something that most haven’t tried. You actually scoop the marrow right out of the actual bone and spread it on toasted bread. The new tradition at Lonely Pines is to order a shot of whiskey and pour it down the split bone and do the shot like a luge! Ha-ha

Libations

Well… you know this is his wheelhouse so yes full bar great wine list and kick butt cocktails. Make sure to ask about the Bartender’s Creation… they know what their doing! My husband said they nailed the Manhattan ;)

“Happy Trails”

…or  desserts made in-house including their sorbets and ice cream def worth saving room. I had the champagne sorbet … cheers! Kevin tried the vanilla because sometimes you can learn how good ice cream is by how good the simpliest flavor is. We also shared the beignets Yes, yes, yes I do recommend you do too.

There is an adorable outside seating area that is in the covered front entrance area with 6 tables.

Good Stuff:

You really need to check out all things Jacob is involved in if you love fun stuff! A couple of his endevors have been written up in national publications (and Hey Michelle :) haha

A New Game In Town… Fowling!

What is it?

Fowling (foe-ling) is football and bowling mixed together. Fowling is to Michigan as Cornhole is to Cincinnati. Opening May 3rd, this will be the first location outside of Michigan where you can play this game. The Fowling Warehouse a  50,000 sq. ft. warehouse offers plenty of room for fun.  The space is set up with lots of cornhole sets but you play with bowling pins instead of throwing bean bags. The object is simple you need to knock down all of your opponent’s bowling pins — with a football.  What is not so simple is doing just that! Seriously, all I could think of was Marsha Brady’s nose when I was lobbing that ball across the “field”. I told Ernest Lawrence, the guy who has been hands on literally helping weld and build a lot of the interior, “You have to pay attention, or you might clobber the person next to you. Especially if you are as a bad at throwing as I am!” He did say the bonus to being a bad aim is if you hit some of the pins on other people’s boards, it counts for them so they may be ok with it. HAHAHA.  This game is really fun for everyone!  There is a tricky way to win a game a lot faster… If you knock down the back middle pin  #5 off the board and nothing else falls down that is called a “bonk.” If you get a “bonk” not only do you automatically win but you get to run over by the bar and pull the pin down and a really loud fog horn will let everyone in Cincinnati know that you had a “bonk”!

How much?

There are 30 lanes – with 15 for walk-ins or open play. You can get a wristband to play all day. When there is a packed house, they will rotate play by having the loser go to the back of the line. So, you may meet some new folks by ending up playing with strangers. If you want to reserve lanes there are 15 more courts for larger parties. 10 people $120 for 2 hour minimum. For regular play it is $10 per person for all day!

What’s do drink?

There are 2 bars that will have a rotating tap of 12 different brews and it’s the cool “bottoms up” beer dispenser … so fun!  They will also have 100 other beers along with the “Mystery Beer” machine. You pay either $2, $3 whatever price point you chose, and they grab and give it .. get what you get and like it! :) They have a decent stage for bands or D.J. and tons of TV’s.

Click the below to see the cool “bottoms up”

Food?

BYOF – NO food will be served so you can bring in anything you want.

Fun facts:

The bar is 48 ft. which is the length of a bowling alley.
